‘Fill the Void’를 만든 로스앤젤레스의 1인 개발자 Morph가 신작 Trillionaire Mercenaries of 21XX의 게임플레이 트레일러와 무료 데모를 공개했다. 개발자는 이 게임을 “메탈기어 솔리드 V와 젤다의 전설 바람의 택트의 만남”이라고 소개한다. 바다에 잠긴 미래 세계에서 조만장자(Trillionaire)에게 고용된 용병이 되어 비밀 작전을 수행하는 3인칭 잠입 어드벤처로, 스팀 상점에는 2027년 11월 9일 출시 예정으로 올라 있다.
바다에 잠긴 21XX년, 노트북 한 대에서 시작된 의뢰
배경은 기후 변화로 물에 잠긴 지구다. 세 개의 기업 국가가 남은 땅과 자원을 두고 전쟁을 벌이고, 인간과 기계의 경계는 흐려졌다. 각 기업은 인공 신을 만들기 위해 경쟁하고 있으며, 가장 먼저 완성하는 쪽이 미래를 차지한다.
플레이어는 세계 권력의 균형을 뒤집으려는 조만장자들에게 고용된 고독한 용병이다. 첫 의뢰인은 은퇴한 조만장자 벡터 헤니건(Vector Hennigan). 노트북 한 대를 훔쳐 오는 대가로 6만 달러와 1954년식 펜더 스트라토캐스터를 내건다. 물론 일은 한 번으로 끝나지 않는다.
무엇보다 잠입, 얼굴을 스캔해 변장도
미션은 절벽 위 CFO 저택 털기, 해상 데이터 센터 파괴, 정글 연구소의 미치광이 과학자 납치, 변장하고 할리우드 힐스 레이브 파티에 잠입해 CFO 암살하기 등이다. 모든 미션이 세 초강대국을 전쟁으로 한 걸음씩 몰아가는 비밀 작전으로 이어진다. 스토리 미션은 20개 이상이다.
핵심은 잠입이다. 경비병을 마킹하고 시야에서 벗어나며, 순찰대를 통째로 재우거나 클로킹으로 몰래 지나갈 수 있다. 목표 인물의 얼굴을 스캔하면 그 사람으로 변장해 정면으로 걸어 들어가는 것도 가능하다. 들키면 싸워서 빠져나오면 된다. 미션마다 메인·서브 목표와 랭크가 매겨진다.
적병을 납치해 나만의 부대로, 바다를 누비는 오픈 월드
메탈기어 솔리드 V의 ‘풀턴 회수’를 떠올리게 하는 요소도 있다. 미션 중 쓰러뜨린 우수한 병사를 해상 기지 스틸워터(Stillwater)로 데려가 자기 깃발 아래 일하게 만들 수 있으며, 이렇게 해금하는 플레이어블 캐릭터는 100명이 넘는다. 북극여우나 랩터 같은 동물 동료도 곁에서 함께 싸운다.
무대는 오픈 월드 바다다. 배를 타고 섬과 북극 금고, 리조트, 미래 도시 사이를 오가고, 행글라이더로 절벽에서 뛰어내리거나 라이트 바이크로 아우터 림의 고속도로를 달린다. 무기·장비·캐릭터 업그레이드 경로도 준비됐다.
스토리 전체를 분할 화면 협동으로
스토리 전체를 한 화면에서 친구와 분할 화면 협동으로 즐길 수 있다. 두 사람이 묶여 다니지 않아, 기지를 양쪽에서 동시에 치거나 한 명이 목표를 마킹하는 동안 다른 한 명이 잠입하는 식의 플레이가 가능하다. 온라인으로는 커스텀 아레나 대전과 라이트 바이크 레이스를 지원한다. 사이버펑크 테마의 음악 제작 프로그램(DAW)도 게임 안에 들어 있다.
Morph는 음악가이자 영상 제작자로, 아트 프로젝트 ‘MorphLand’ 아래 게임을 만들어 왔다. 이번 작품은 그의 게임 중 가장 큰 규모이며, 현재 함께할 퍼블리싱 파트너를 찾고 있다. 무료 데모는 itch.io에서 받을 수 있으나 영어만 지원한다. 정식 버전은 한국어를 완벽 지원할 예정이라고 개발자는 밝혔다.

Los Angeles-based solo developer Morph, the creator of ‘Fill the Void’, has released a gameplay trailer and a free demo for his new game, Trillionaire Mercenaries of 21XX. The developer describes it as “Metal Gear Solid V meets Wind Waker.” It is a third-person stealth adventure in which you work as a mercenary for trillionaires, running covert operations in a future world swallowed by the ocean. The Steam store page lists the release for November 9, 2027.
21XX, an Earth under water, and a job that starts with one laptop
The game is set on a waterlogged Earth after climate change. Three corporate nation states war over the land and resources that remain, and the line between human and machine has blurred. Each corporation is racing to build an artificial God, and whoever finishes first owns the future.
You play a lone mercenary hired by trillionaires who want to tip the global balance of power. Your first client, retired trillionaire Vector Hennigan, offers $60,000 and a 1954 Fender Stratocaster to steal one laptop. Of course, it is never just one job.
Stealth first, and disguise by scanning faces
Missions include robbing a CFO’s cliffside mansion, destroying an offshore data center, abducting a mad scientist from a jungle lab, and crashing a Hollywood Hills rave in disguise to assassinate a CFO. Every mission is a covert operation that pushes the three superpowers one step closer to war. There are more than 20 story missions.
Stealth is the core. You can mark guards, stay out of sight, put whole patrols to sleep or cloak and slip past. Scan a target’s face and you can walk straight in as that person. If you get caught, you fight your way out. Every mission is ranked, with main and side objectives.
Capture soldiers for your own army, and sail an open world ocean
There is also a system that recalls the Fulton extraction of Metal Gear Solid V. Knock out the best soldiers you meet on missions and extract them to Stillwater, your base on the ocean, to work under your own flag. More than 100 playable characters can be unlocked this way. Animal buddies such as an arctic fox or a raptor fight at your side.
The world is an open ocean. Sail between islands, arctic vaults, resorts and cities of the future, throw yourself off cliffs on a hang glider, and race the highways of the Outer Rim on a light bike. Weapons, gear and characters all have upgrade paths.
The full story in split-screen co-op
The whole story can be played with a friend on the same couch in split-screen co-op. You are never tied together, so you can hit a base from two sides at once, or have one player mark targets while the other moves in. Online, the game offers versus matches in custom arenas and light bike races. It even includes a fully functional cyberpunk-themed DAW (music production tool).
Morph is a musician and filmmaker who makes games under the art project ‘MorphLand’. This is his biggest game yet, and he is currently looking for a publishing partner. The free demo is available on itch.io, in English only. The developer says the full version will fully support Korean.
